Hi, my name is Ciara, and I am the founder at Health Focus Ireland. I am a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and PhD researcher who specialises in primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases.

From my school days I’ve always had a passion for learning and understanding what makes us healthy, and it was a natural progression for me that I would end up studying Sports Science And Health at Dublin City University (DCU), where I graduated with a first class Honours Degree in 2015.

I am now a qualified BACPR Level 4 Cardiac Specialist Instructor, which enables me to safely prescribe and deliver effective evidence based exercise rehabilitation and lifestyle programs for individuals with cardiovascular disease. I am also a member of the National Institute for Prevention and Cardiovascular Health (NIPC), having completed my full training certificate for the “Delivering Evidence-based Cardiac Rehabilitation in Practice” course

Following the completion of my undergraduate degree, I was offered and accepted a Master’s degree scholarship to work on a project titled PATHway (Physical Activity towards Health), under the supervision of Professor Niall Moyna, an expert in Exercise Cardiology. PATHway is a technology enabled programme that is designed to promote home-based exercise in people with cardiovascular disease.

During my undergraduate studies and from my subsequent time working in Navan Hospital and in the local community as an exercise tutor, my interest in the use of exercise and lifestyle changes as a treatment to improve health and quality of life for those at a high risk of obtaining a chronic disease and for those already living with one, reached a new level where I felt I had to do something more about this, something more practical that could have a really positive impact on people’s lives.

So I undertook some research to establish the viability of creating and delivering community based programs and classes to benefit people with chronic health conditions. This research led to me setting up a new health and wellness company called Health Focus Ireland in 2019. Based in Navan, Health Focus Ireland currently operates in the County Meath area, as well as online.

In tandem with this, I was also offered a PhD scholarship and as part of this I received funding to design the first ever home-based exercise rehab programme for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) here in Ireland, where I worked closely with Professor Moyna, Professor Sean Gaine, and Dr. Brian McCullagh Consultant Respiratory Physicians, in Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin.

I am a strong believer in movement as a medicine and I really enjoy working collaboratively to achieve strong and successful outcomes. My passion and focus now lives in the area of health promotion and primary and secondary prevention of chronic disease (such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and obesity).

I believe in educating, informing and providing individuals and community groups with the tools, knowledge and skills to help my clients build sustainable and healthy lifestyles with exercise and physical activity as a core component.

Taking this approach helps us to bridge the gap between traditional research interventions and bringing clients back into a real world setting. More importantly, the Health Focus Ireland approach allows individuals the opportunity to once again take control of their health and ultimately improve the quality of their years.

“Ciara attended our factory to deliver a Health & Wellbeing Talk to our employees during our Health & Safety Awareness Day. Her talk was tailored specifically to our employees, the majority of which are male, aimed at promoting and highlighting the benefits of taking care of their health and well-being. Ciara presented the talk in a well-structured, friendly and informative manner, encouraging and welcoming interaction with the staff. The feedback from staff was very positive and has prompted them to participate in after-work team activities. Ciara is very organized, knowledgeable and professional and I would highly recommend her to any employer wishing to engage her for a similar presentation.”
